Is it only arrangement playback that causes the freeze, or will other actions freeze as well?

Only when pressing the play button or turning the power off.

In fact, it is not a real freeze since the task manager shows that Podium is active : it takes between 40 / 50 % CPU on my Core2Duo 2 GHz.
But nothing can be done and the tasl manager says that it is not responding.
Last time I have waited 15 minutes… and killed the task !

    You are right, BUT.
My feeling is that if a car constructor has to show flashy warnings saying that “you have to press this button before turning the wheel to the right” or “don’t remove your left hand while you slow down”, there is a basic designing problem somewhere…
People will ask themselves why they cannot simply turn the wheel and slow down like with other cars ?
The constructor has to solve his mechanical problems and not show how it is complicated to construct a car, it is not the conductor’s problem.

In Podium, some things are really nice and simple to do, but there are also a lot of strange and unlogical things to do that result in too much key presses and mouse clicks (!), and more regrettable, moments of total lack of understanding. At least, for me 🙁

But nevertheless I will continue, and will wait the time that will be needed to see custom keyboard and mouse shortcuts, unified compact and expanded mode, a simple “normal” copy/paste behaviour, a “total recall” of the opened plugins and windows etc…

I have had some similar problems with simple copy/paste between arrangements.
I really hope that Frits will finish to consolidate the compact mode because it can be actually extremely confusing !

My example consists to copy 2 events on 2 tracks from an arrangement to another one (the two in compact mode).
Copy/pasting has always been strangely convoluted in Podium, but it can now become a total mess.

    1. the 2 selected events, the topmost track selected :

    2. the 2 events pasted, the topmost track selected, the 2nd event goes on the level automation track, not too bad…

    3. second try, 1st arrangement, the second track is now selected before copying the events :

    4. the 2 events pasted (second track selected) : the first one doesn’t appear, but it plays :

    5. looking at the same arrangement in Expanded mode :

    6. unhiding a lane in the first track : it was here !

How a such simple thing as copy/paste of events can result into a so complicated result ?
I know that the answer is because in the 1st arrangement there is a plugin lane on the second track and not in the second arrangement, but it must not be a problem for the user…

The old original Expanded mode, when not hidding lanes !, was at least clear and logical until you had understood the way it worked.
The “new” compact mode seems to be as easy to use as what we find in other DAWS, but the two modes are not well harmonized : the compact mode looks like a workaround to the complexity and automation limits of the hierarchic engine, but actually results in some unlogical behaviours from the point of view of the user.
Finishing the transition between the two modes (and hiding completely the old one ?) seems to me to be a high priority.

Is the sound file saved ok?

    Yes

Does the freeze happen even if you wait a long time after the save?

It seems, but I have not waited more than a few minutes…

Is it only arrangement playback that causes the freeze, or will other actions freeze as well?

I will try and tell you. Thanks.

    Hi Frits,

I suppose that you had no time to look at this, but is always a problem…

I may add an option for this behaviour in a future update.

    Thank you A LOT Frits ! 😛

Druid : do you use parameter automation clip or CC 64 MIDI clip ?
Normally, the sustain pedal value must not been reseted on clip end.

Yes, it is a weird behavior which has been discussed…

I have already asked for an option in the preferences to switch between the current mode – reset value when there is no automation clip – and keeping the last previous value, like for MIDI events.

There is only 1 other item I really think is needed and would hope you do add it to v.2….

I would have another one 😳 : automatic scan of subfolders !
Yes, I know, this is a very old request, but I think that it would be nice to have it together with the new template structure and folder paths (and for all the other reasons too…).

If I have a crash in Podium all my work is lost. It could be 1 minutes worth or hours. Podium seems to save your work properly only when you exit the application. Even if I save the project in two places with different names I still lose changes in both projects! Sad
Sometimes a Podium prompt appears describing the problem but either way any changes are lost.
If there is some way to add a save process (autosave or versioning) that can survive a crash it would be easily as important as the current v.2 features. One can have many features but if your work is lost (should the application crash) it can negate many useful features IMO.
Live, ACID, Sonar all provide either a way to recover a crashed project when you start the app up again or… project versioning.

I have taken the habit to save evry 5 minutes… So yes, I will appreciate an automatic crash recovery too !
By the way, a simple Save icon will also be appreciated since it will avoid to have to jump to the keyboard or to the project menu. And it might not be too hard to implement 😉

Do you mean “Yes, I would mind” or “Yes, I prefer file-based track templates”?

    Yes, the second yes 😉

What do you think. Would you mind that the old track template system is removed in favor of a new file-based template system?

    Yes 😛

    Hi,

The last laptop that I have bought one year ago had Vista. I have spent a few days to look at the changes, and since it seemed to be not very reactive, to make the fans run a lot, I have just installed a second boot with XP : the computer has been faster and cooler with XP, so I boot one time a month in Vista, do some things during 10 minutes, and reboot into XP.

It is not bad, but for me, a good customized XP is far better, nicer and simpler.

It is like when OS X has replaced OS 9 (no, it was a lot worst !) : a lot of people (all people that do music that I know, including me) had continued to use OS 9 during a few years until it has been mature (10.3 for me).
The good thing with a double boot is that you are not forced to make a choice, it is safe. You will see by yourself after some time.
