Hi timandmonica,
I agree with the suggestions made to demo both products (if you have not done so already). It would be easy for one person to say this product is much better because of features x y or z but the myriad of different ways we interact with hosts really makes one persons recommendation over another host only go so far.
The really important factor is how they fit your requirements, style and approach.
You want a richer feature set than Tracktion can provide…
Well give or take a handful of certain features I do not think Podium or Reaper can provide a radically greater feature rich experience than Tracktion3.
All three hosts share a multitude of features..really. Is there a specific area you want features in…MIDI, audio, notation, video, hardware support, FX, Instruments, import or export options e.t.c???
What features does Tracktion lack for you?
Podium Tracktion and Reaper can all provide a more feature rich experience in perhaps certain areas maybe, but It would not be a case of different features as such but perhaps a different implementation of them.
I know you want a fast track viewpoint but unless there is absolutely no way you can dedicate some hours to really work the way you want in Podium and Reaper demos then really I think the demo route will really save you from making a hasty decision.
Have a look at his thread”Has Anyone Tried Reaper and How Does It Compare?” there is a fair bit of Podium and Reaper comparisons there.
Although Podium, Reaper and Tracktion have moved on feature wise since that thread was started by SEAS,it should at least give you some foundation for a quick and basic comparison to save you time if you really are in a hurry.
But if you can find the time, I suggest like others have done so to demo all of them first.

I can’t find a upload ftp command in my IE7 page menu. There is a “Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer” command. I’m on Windows Vista, which may be the difference.
Can anyone recommend some freeware FTP explorers?
I’ve previously used:
http://filezilla-project.org/
I stopped using it when I got Windows Vista, and found that I could use Windows Explorer for all my FTP needs.
FTP upload in Vista…
“How do I upload files to an FTP website?
To upload files to an FTP website, you usually need certain permissions from the person who owns the site. That person must also give you a user name and password, which you’ll need to sign in to the FTP site.
Open the FTP website in your browser.
Click Page, and then click Open FTP site in Windows Explorer. If you use a different web browser, follow the instructions that came with your browser. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
In Windows Explorer, press ALT, click File, and then click Login as.
Type the user name and password, and then click Log On.
After you sign in, you can copy files to the FTP website by copying and pasting.”
Just copy and paste.
Or…use Filezilla (which you already have / have used) it works on Vista here, unless you are having problems with it 😐

Hi druid,

From what I’ve seen so far, this sort of thing is done for two reasons:
First, when it is a company pushing for a release, and the programmers have no choice. Sometimes, the company pushing is a partner company (a big-time audio company like Steinberg, or Cakewalk, for example only). Luckily, Frits is not in this situation at this time.
Correct yes. Frits has no pressure from a publisher, marketing department, or distributor.
Second, when the small group or even individual if there is only one person working on the project, has a release schedule which they stick by that is regular, for instance the good old weekly updates Jorgen used to do for energyXT. This also includes the darker side of this, where the person is rushing themselves for a release, desperate to appease themselves (from boredom or something else?) or the masses waiting and hungering for a program. Frits does not do it quite this way either, I don’t think.
It is certainly the reverse of user pressure here. The remarkable speed with which fixes have appeared in Podium attracted and keeps me interested in the product.
I have read this many times in different places “pretty much any host provides a more than capable environment for professional, commercial grade productions” with that in mind reliability becomes a key factor as one has all the basic key features covered in pretty much every host these days.
In a crowded host market rock solid reliability and fast fixes funnily enough are not that common or as common as we would all like. (A key opportunity for Podium to stand out).
Podium’s time frame for fixes have started to slip a bit. There was another bug that was not addressed until the end of 1.95’s dev cycle (Aug to Nov) not deliberately though of course…and to be fair Frits did apologise but things might be slipping again.
Even Cakewalk to their credit with the Uber feature rich Sonar get fixes out quicker than 3 months. Ableton even as well.
Since Frits doesn’t seem to fit in either of these boats (which is another reason why I chose to come over here from energyXT and since I can still use both anyway! :D) I think there would be no problem fixing such things for him. No one is pushing him to release that is paying him serious money, and I don’t think he would feel particularly rushed on his own schedule either.. maybe.
Exactly yes. He has none of the pressure most devs have.
Well, this is how I see it. So my feeling is it will get fixed! Of course… *ahem* I happen to have not been around here very long so… Some of you long-time inhabitants would have better idea than me.
Defintely Frits will address present issues. It was just the timeframe that myself and sam c were concerned about. 😉 it seems strange in a way but reliability can be *the* reason why one buys and continues to use a host. Especially in a crowded host market.
I have read many comments on the net about some host users being ready to pay for a more stable release for some hosts.
What are 90% of host related threads about..? Problems, problems and more problems.
Very little of that here so far but that state of affairs has to be maintained or things will head down that route here as well.
All the features in the world are useless if a host can’t keep up. Less, with high reliability will result in far more productivity compared to more features that are totally unreliable.
I think Podium can remain very reliable but only if certain fixes are not stretched over months needlessly. Reliability (quicker fixes) are a key selling point for Podium not just a user preference. Without a huge marketing budget for magazine adds e.t.c every unique selling point counts especially with so much competition out there.

I’ll consider adding an option to move this folder in a future update.
Yes please do consider it, thanks.

This is most likely the same problem that Conquistador reported. When I have this fixed (hopefully in 1.99), please report back if you still have problems.
“hopefully in 1.99” 🙂
It is always best to never make hard promises but I think I would rather have 1.99 delayed as long as necessary to address the playback / audio engine crash issues. If 1.99 is released without those fixes it would be at least another 4 – 8 weeks for a 2.00 fix. That would be a very long and highly unusual time frame for a fix, especially based on past responses to fixes and also considering your existing time constraints with Nucleum already and a likely 2nd Sythmaker plug (drum sampler) to follow that.
I appreciate you might want to get 1.99 out soon but getting it out properly is also no doubt a very high priority for you. It certainly is for me. Please as usual take as long as you need to address any fixes. Reliability is one of Podiums major key selling points and IMO must be preserved as much as possible.
On another note…
Hopefully this automation issue (acousmods quote)…
“Draw a volume enveloppe or a plugin automation, mute the track during playing, unmute it : all the enveloppes are ignored…
You have to stop and restart playing”
…has been addressed already in 1.99. It is quite a long standing issue but you thought (after some investigation and reflection) might require a minor audio engine adjustment ” a few days work”. If it has not yet been addressed please consider this a gentle reminder for 1.99. 🙂
Thanks!

A. Crash when using the “Move Effect Track” command.
I managed to reproduce a crash. I’ll look into this.
Thanks for your help.
FWIW I had another crash yesterday that made my screen go black while totally locking up the whole OS. I have not seen any app do that on Vista.
Inserting instruments or FX during playback can at times also bring Podium down….that has been a intermittent problem but at times if you are about 50% or more CPU wise into a project inserting FX or Instruments during playback can cause problems for Podiums Audio engine at times….certainly based on my experience.
Podiums Audio engine does seem a bit fragile during realtime operations.
B. Deleting tracks and strange behavior.
If you have an instrument mapping on track it appears you cannot delete the track. Certainly I cannot use the Delete Track command it just does not work but the Eraser tool works..I can’t reproduce this. I have no problems deleting a track with an instrument on it. Please give more details.
I am struggling to repro this one. Once I can catch it, I will send over the offending project so that you too can repro the problem easily.
]C. Dragging mappings within a track panel will create a copy. Unless I missed the implementation of drag and drop support within a track panel (in compact mode), I will have to assume this behavior is not as intended?
Support for drag-reordering tracks within a group panel is not yet implemented.
That is what I thought. It is a bit weird as it duplicates a mapping once it is dragged but if it is not supposed to do that then it is probably best if the behavior is changed as it clearly is buggy. It might even be causing problems elsewhere. 😐
