    Nice. I like it.

It is a delicate and pleasantly understated change that gives a classy look to Podium. A simple strip of colour I think works very well. The “Drums”, “1Freq (zPEQ)” and “Vocal” tracks interestingly can still be quickly identified even though there are no events that are visible (in the screen shot at least) on those tracks.

This is impressive because the “1Freq (zPEQ)” and “Vocal” tracks in particular are minimized, yet they can still be identified quickly with the new strips. The coloured track bands that stretch across the arranger (from a previous Podium update) work very well with the new slim strips to aid the easy identification of minimized tracks.

Furthermore you may notice that I have added a spacing between track groups, making a clearer division between groups and parameter tracks.

    Another nice touch. Thanks.

Anyone still prefer the old colorized track headers? Otherwise they are going out.

Out with the old, in with the new IMO but…how does the Mixer look now? Are you making these changes there as well or leaving it as is? It might be better to offer a mix of the two colour processes, perhaps leaving the mixer as is.

I like seeing a fully coloured mixer strip in the mixer but I do prefer your new look track strips for track level viewing. 🙂

Conquistador … thanks for answering. I know this feature but it does not work with multiple midi input devices. And sometimes I want a midi input stay on a track for cc messages and select another track at the some time or playing drums with a trigger finger and some pads with a keyboard or ….

Agreed, the “Auto-Assign To Focus Track” works well in a lot of situations but sometimes it’s not the best option and I really like how it works in the mixer, click, choose, ready to go.

I just mentioned this because it is the only thing left to add to the track header and the mixer and inspector can be hidden without missing them. For me it would be very useful but thats just me …. 😀

He he…ok I can see why you asked now… agreed it does make sense 🙂

Later on I may add a track menu command that can switch between pre/post faders without having to enter the track properties dialog.

Good idea. That would be much easier.

    Agreed, very nice!

One thing is still missing in the track header. We can create now bounce tracks, effect tracks and we can map plugins to those tracks. What I’m still missing is to assign an input map in the track header. After assigning an input map in the mixer or inspector it is possible to change the input map but there is no way to add/change an input map when no input map was assigned before.

Swindus…apologies in advance if I have misunderstood your request 😉 but if you right click on your midi / audio input mapping and select the “Auto-Assign To Focus Track” command, does this not already provide a set and forget feature that negates the need for an input mapping command in the new track headers?

My thoughts on Beta 10 changes…

    >applause< As Acousmod said “it integrates perfectly”. It looks like it has always been there. A sure sign of hitting the right spot. Excellent. Better visibility, and GUI consistency has been maintained with a nice designers touch. @Zynewave wrote:

I also moved the faders to the top of the track header, and dropped the glass-look. I’m looking forward to comments on this new look.

I think it’s fine at the top. Probably better there. I think it’s more intuitive to use at the top of the track header. Nice.

Thanks for responding to the feedback about the text size and adding the “L” and “R” letters when panning. It’s just right now.

    Cheers Frits! 🙂

    My take on the sliders…
I definitely prefer sliders to dials especially for panning. I agree with Swindus “it makes more sense to pan to the left or right instead of panning to the top and bottom”. But I would hasten to add that it makes more sense to us but not necessarily for other Podium users.

I don’t know if Frits will include an option for users like thcilnnahoj but I can see why it might not be to everyone’s taste but personally I like the new pan sliders.

I do agree with thcilnnahoj on this matter though…”The pan value is very hard to read”. It is not terribly difficult but the text is… tiny …sorry. It is legible and I can work with it but I would prefer not to have to work with text that small.

    Suggestions
1.Would it not be possible to increase the vertical size of the pan and gain sliders even a little bit please?

2.Also for the pan slider…increasing the width of the button to match the gain slider button size would help as you could add the letter “L” to the slider as soon as one moves it from the centre to the left and “R” can appear immediately after any move is made to the right. Of course the pan value will remain visible in the centre of the glass button. The letters “L” or “R” would appear either side of it, when there is *any* movement left or right.

Right now L or R appears only when the slider is 100% fully left or right. I think those letters should appear as soon as the slider moves either left or right not only at a fully 100% panned position. That will provide more feedback especially with such a tiny value to see.

    3. The letter “C” could replace the pan values when the pan slider is fully central. This would immeadiately solve the problem I had (below) and new users will face when loading up Podium. If “C” is visible on the button when central, one can easily know what it does at a glance.

    A problem
Something else to think about Frits…1.95 will cause a big splash because of all the changes but…the first thing I thought when I loaded up Beta 9 was “which slider is for Gain and which one is for Pan”? Not good. Moving my mouse over the dials gave me no info as well.

While all the changes since 1.94 are very welcome and definitely improve things I feel it is is necessary to caution against adding too many new features with no indicator as to what they do. No popups, updated guide, Wiki articles…

There is too much guess work in Podium 1.95 (as of now)…especially with new features IMO.

Releasing 1.95 and a tutorial or an updated guide (at the same time) would would be great. 🙂

You spoke of a 3rd arrangement mode…any news on that or have you decided to do away with it?

Double clicking the fader or the pan dial opens the properties dialog and sets focus to the gain or pan edit field, so you can quickly enter a precise numeric value. Ctrl+clicking faders or dials will reset to default (i.e. 0dB for the gain).

Right you are, that does work cheers!

I noticed that double clicking on the volume or gain control will result in the track properties popping up.

One can easily bring up the Track properties window by clicking just about anywhere else on a track or mixer strip already so can you possibly change this behavior so that a double click on the new glass gain sliders at track level will reset the value of a slider to 0db instead of bringing up the properties window?

Some other hosts have this feature and it is really quite useful to have.

    Thanks.

There should be some additional Free Candy and Majestic libraries on the way. I’ll update this thread once Yellow tools release them. 😉

The main drive of my comments were more to do with Automapping really anyway acousmod. AFAICT I have only run into the multichannel issue with Voxengo’s Overtone so it is a problem but just not the main issue I have right now.

Complain? I think my comments are more of a balanced observation than a complaint or rant. I think if a post remains constructive and to the point, then even a constructive but critical comment is a good thing. 🙂

For all plugins that have more than 2 inputs / outputs, you have to manually convert them to multichannel :
    – right click
    – select New multichannel insert mapping
    – delete the mapping with #1

I think I have to do the same thing with the excellent GEQ Overtone Plugin from Voxengo I had a similar problem here…

It’s strange really IMO Podium has a real weakness when it comes to plug in handling. Certain aspects of Podium lead to far too much guessing and needless head scratching for such an obviously refined product. Strange. 😕 I say that as a heavy user of Podium. Talk less of new users.

I hope that Podium will do it automatically some day or at least ask the question when importing…

Yes agreed 100%. Podium needs to interact (provide more info to a user) and do away with the manual process we have for certain types of plugs, and plug ins in general. The current process for plug in handling in general is far behind other hosts.

Working with drums could also be much easier. I would not have said these things 3 months ago even, but I think Podium has definitely now reached a level of maturity where a standard process for plug in handling that can be found elsewhere in other hosts should at least now be present in Podium.

While Frits only has one set of hands the harsh reality is that comparisons will always be made with other product standards, work flows and features elsewhere. I think that is a good thing for a Product trying gain market share. There is no point being a clone of another product, but plug in handling processes elsewhere really are something to look at to address current problems in this area.

That is pretty much my only (and major) stumbling block with an otherwise superb product offering at the moment.

I may even decide to force hide effect tracks in compact mode, and thereby remove the “hide track lane” option, to further reduce UI complexity.

I agree with estwing, that is a very good idea. That will definitely help keep things simple thanks.
