I do have a credit standing with L&M but they didn’t have any in. I think the stores out west only get what’s surplus from the east stores (just kidding). They said it could take up to two weeks to ge one in (but they have Tascam in stock which is why they are pushing them and not the PM I guess). I’ll tell them to bring one in.

I appreciate your help on this.

The latest SOS has a pretty decent write-up on the Project Mix.

When I talked to L&M here… They were trying to steer me away from the M-Audio to the Tascam FW1082. It sounded like they had a bit of a surplus. Price was $1049cdn. The Tascam doen’t have the LCD display though… I guess the question is is it worth a $200 differential. Initially I thought no, but after I watched the PM video and thought a bit about it, I can definatley see a benefit…. What else did you look at before you went with the PM?

Thanks Suges… I’ve called to the stores in town here and none have a Project Mix, but I am heading to Vegas in a couple of weeks and check one out while there. wo stores quoted a price of $1250 (cdn). Any idea on pricing in your neck of the woods.

If you open extra browser windows, you can actually have more than one arrangement open simultaneously. Useful if you want to copy stuff from one to the other.

Cool. I figured there had to be a logical reason. Opening multiple browser windows is something you just can’t do in Tracktion. Your approach makes perfect sense. You’ve really thought this out haven’t you?

This worked great great. Thanks for the feedback. I was incorrect when I said Tracktion loaded VSTs when opening a project, it’s when you open an arrangement. Is there a reason why POdium does not automatically load plugins when the arrangement is opened? I have no issue with using the power button, I’m just curious if there is a reason.

Otherwise I’m liking this more and more. Very different approach from Tracktion but after awhile it starts making sense.

    1. Hit “power” button (shift+space) right after loading your project. This will load all your instruments in memory.

    2. You must create new preset for Jamstix before saving your project. Press “new” button in the presets window (in the left part of track inspector) to do that. After preset creating your Jamstix arrangement will be loading with Podium project.

Cool I will give both a try.

Another question regarding Jamstix and Podium…

I’ve noticed a couple of differences with how Jamstix loads in Podium as compared to Tracktion. I do prefer the way it works in tracktion, but I may not be doing it quite right within Podium.

The 1st thing difference relates to when I bring Jamstix into a project. With Tracktion it seems to pre-load everything so that when I hit the play button it goes. With Podium, Jamstix is in the project but doesn’t load until you hit the play button. You then have a bit of a delay while it loads the samples before it goes.

The 2nd difference has to do with how Jamstix arrangements are loaded. With Tracktion, when I open a project that has been saved with Jamstix, when I re-open that project, the Jamstix arrangement is automatically opened. I don’t have to save the arrangement nor do I have to do anything special to re-open it. Trscktion seems to look after that rather well. With Podium, once Jamstix has been started as done per above, the arranment material isn’t there. It seems the only for wme to re-open an arrangement is to save the arrangement within Jamstix before closing the project and then opening the saved Jamstix arrangement from within Jamstix. I’m not sure if I am missing something here, or if this is intentional. If intentional I don’t understand the rational.

However, I much prefer the way Podium handles multiple outs compared to TRacktions approach of having to wrap it in a rack.

One more thing, is there a count-in option for recording?

I had that happening with Betabugs Spinbug. I can load it manually however without problem.

    Wow…

Excellent posts and that is probably one of the best (most meaningful) comparisons I have had regarding the different platforms.

I’ve started a song in Podium. I want to work through the whole process and see what I really think about it. So far though it has been very positive and I guess with what I save on Podium I could put towards a good control surface and some quality plugins.

    I really appreciate the feedback.

Regarding Tracktion. It was my 1st DAW and like losing your virginity, that first one/time holds a special a place in your heart. But having said that as you become more experienced you start to see things in a different light. The shortcomings start to become more apparent and it becomes to move on. I think that time has come for me and Tracktion. I come here and get a session of tough love counselling. I think that’s great.

Darcy. It’s 90 bucks. You’re not buying a car. There’s no better sequencer at that price, and you know it. Buy it already.

    Did I mention it’s…*90* bucks? (That’s less than $100.)

You know that’s funny… I have no qualms stepping on to a car lot and driving off have spent a few 10’s of thousands of dollars, but here I am arguing with myslef over this. My argument is 3 pronged:

    1) Do I stick with Tracktion? It does most of what I want but I have been coming across some quircks that are becoming more and more annoying. (Note: Tracktion has cost me about $100)
    2) Do I go to Podium? Looks pretty good. I want to do a song from start to finish to really see how the workflow compares to Tracktion. I will miss Final Mix which is a Tracktion only VST though.
    3) Do I take a more significant purchase and move to Cubase or Cakewalk or even Pro Tools?

Money isn’t so much the issue but getting the product that will work best for me is. I’ve even considered moving off the PC platform altogether and going with Mac, but 1 sweet little VSTi has stopped me from that so far.

    Cheers…

Option A sounds to me to be very similar to the current freeze function in Traction (well sort of). For those not familiar with Tracktion, if I want freeze a track, I select the track I want to freeze and hit a freeze button in the transport section. The appplication stops and a render to a temporary file is done. Now if I wanted to feeze a 2nd track, I would go to the track freeze select and again hit the freeze button. The 1st track is re-rendered and then the 2nd track is rendered. If I want to freeze 5 tracks, each of those tracks is re-rendered each time I make change. For example, if I change an effect on track 2. I would have to unfreeze that track make the change and freeze (and all 5 tracks would have to be re-rendered. Not very efficient. The other issue I have with Tracktions freeze is thatwhen I freeze I have to freeze the entire effects chain as well. For example, if I was using a CPU intensive soft synth and I wanted to freeze the synth and still be able to manipulat effect after the synth I can’t do that. Instead I would have to track render and in some instances I actually have to do an export (which is a full render) to get a rendered track. This is really the one thing that drives me crazy with Tracktion.
What option A has over Tracktion is that due to it hierarchy approach I can freeze just the synth and still be able to work with effects. I would agree that Option C might be problematic due to the cpu resources that would be utilized because isn’t the real purpose of freezing to free up used resources.
So to me, it seems option B is the best approach.

Enter the properties dialog for the preset you have assigned to the Jamstix track, and select the ‘use preset as a drum kit’ option. When pressing ok to the properties dialog, you are given the choice to create a default GM compatible map. If JamStix use a special drum-layout, you’ll have to manually modify the individual drum presets within the kit preset. If you are using Jamstix as a multiple out plugin and want the MIDI on a separate track, you’ll need to create a template drum kit preset. For hints, see how the drumatic ‘Kit Template’ preset is used in the freebees project.

Bingo… Jamstix doesn’t realyy use presets as such but when import Jamstix it sets up 16 presets. They aren’t used but I can select one and then set the drum editor switch on and it works fine.

Nice program once you get used to it. Now I just gotta see if like it better than Tracktion enough to pay you to fix that occasional “but not random” silence bug. 😉

    Cheers!

    Another question…

I am trying to use Jamstix witin Podium. Jamstix is drum synth but I can’t seem to be able to pull up the drum editor on the Jamstix track. I do get the piano roll but that’s not what I want. I’ve clcked as much as I can and I can’t seem to find a setting that will switch the piano roll editor to the drum editor. What am I doing wrong?
