To be honest, I just can’t get into this. It’s way to repetitive. I think you’ve done some nice work with altering the hi-hat, and that mid-range rhythm is cool. But, arrangement wise, its the same beat and nearly the same production throughout. It needs a lot more variety and dynamics.

Oh, this rocks — thank you so much! Yes, I really miss that transport in the MIDI editor window. Will add it tonight.

    Hey, Rob:

Welcome! I use Reaper, too. Podium won’t replace Reaper (for me, at least), but it’s a really good program. I especially like the spline-based editing — in fact, the whole way automation is done is great. I also like the hierarchy, the MIDI editor (though I wish it had play controls like Reaper does), and the navigator. The UI is gorgeous. It’s nowhere near as sophisticated on the routing end, and the MIDI export stuff is pretty rudimentary.

One thing that may take you awhile to get used to — it did me, anyway, is how Podium handles bounce tracks. Pay particular attention to that in the manual. I’ve been using the program about two months, so I still have a lot of learning to do. But … it’s definitely on my list of hosts that I’ll continue using.

Those U-he effects are pretty killer, aren’t they? More and more, they’re my go-to effects for sound design stuff.

    Uncle Age:

Thank you very much for listening and commenting.

“1st and foremost, I like it. I’ve given it about 10 replays. So first off I’ll say, Nice Job man!”

    Thank you!

“@ 2:50 I think the silence and reset is anti-climatic”

I hear you. I’ve fretted over that area more than you can imagine. Originally I kept a bass drum with a light multi-tap delay going through there (with no space) but it didn’t feel right either. I think the problem now might be that the space is maybe a second too long. I dunno.

“The very nature of the tune (to me) means that some elements will be repetitive. And you break it up nicely. But after the break/bridge @ 2:36 I was looking for more.”

Another good point. This started out as a trance pastiche, but people weren’t getting the satire aspect of it so after a certain point I just sort of let it find itself. The structure is very simple — ABA (with a few variations). Harmonically it’s very simple, too. I needed an uptempo song in the worst way because most of my stuff is dark and down. I need to add an intro piece (which was done in Podium) and one more song that is part-way done, then I’ll re-release the EP as a full-length next year.

“I’m going to give the rest a listen tonight. And I hope you don’t mind me sharing my thoughts.”

I always enjoy and value criticism. Please bear in mind that everything on the site (except tracks labeled “In Progress”) are complete and mastered, meaning I won’t be making any further changes to them. Just mentioning so that you don’t feel like you’re wasting your time. I value input, however, and want to keep striving to get better and push myself more. So comments are always valuable to me.

I’ll post the intro and a render 3 version of “Stars Around My Head” later this week.

I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate your time. I’m very grateful.

Ah, an embarrassment of riches! Thank you so much for listening and commenting. I think it would be cool if we could get a workshop going. It’s so much more interesting when you have concerned and interested partners in crime. Having said that, let me know where I can hear your songs — PM, email, or here.

Oh, hey, that’s cool. Just didn’t know if people didn’t workshop here or what the general thing was. I, myself, get a lot of benefit from posting songs in progress and commenting on others. I had asked for a music forum in the VIP lounge but was told to post stuff here. Wasn’t trying to chuff anyone. 🙂

I’m a new guy here, so wanted to get a feel for how the forum operates. If people are interested I would love to get a group of folks commenting on each other’s work…

Does no one like to workshop songs here? Just curious. The next piece I post will be from Podium. I’m working on a microtonal piece but I’m only a minute into it. Maybe in a month or so.

If no one is into this sort of thing, then perhaps I’ll just wait and post finished versions.
