    yes, i hadn’t thought it through 😉

    on a side note, as a podium user of 1.5 years, the heirarchical system feels great for me. maybe instead of changing how podium works, you should be focussing on getting new users across that first hurdle. because once they get over it, it’s all cruisin’ from there

    thinking about it further, now I understand why you’d try putting the instruments > FX > master out on the right hand side… would allow you to kind of rotate the current flow 180 degrees

    before you go down that path, maybe it’s time to try reversing the order of the heirarchy… instruments at the top, followed by FX, and eventually all tracks trickle down to the master out. I haven’t thought through the implications of such a move, but I think it would be worth trying to see if all users would benefit from such a change. I suppose, the comfort would come from the fact that in most places in the western world (probably the majority of users, correct me if I’m wrong!) we read from top left to bottom right, so if the signal flowed in the same way it would be easier to understand.

    I wouldn’t go down the way Tracktion does it (yet) but try reversing the direction

    I’m in two minds about this Frits… and I think acousmod is onto something

    I love how alot of spaced is saved in the mixer, and it’s generally less cluttered now. But if you apply this to the track section, and remove the effect lanes as you mention above and have them edited by clicking on lines: I think this is going to lose the idea of the heirarchy and possibly have even less meaning for new users.

    tracks would no longer appear to be grouped around other tracks. especially if the effect tracks were “hidden” by default (only lines displaying) i think the visual flow of audio could get lost.

    sorry to go off topic, but i’ve got a question

    do you reckon you can you regedit to change the names of usb midi devices? I’ve got a number of usb midi controllers which come up with meaningless names such as “USB midi device 1” and “USB midi device 2″… could these names be changed in regedit so that when the devices appear in Podium the names mean something?

    thanks

    Yes, acousmod you raised a good point – I’d love to seem some plugins made by you Frits, as I’m sure they would be of impressive quality. You should still question whether it is worth developing these, when there’s a possibility of gaining permission to use other decent freebies. Just trying to give you all the options here 🙂

    one more option: stefancrs has a licence for synthmaker… that’s right isn’t it stefancrs?

    maybe you can whip up some basic synths/effects for including in example projects? 🙂

    regarding UI: if they had the same look as Podium (even if they were seperate VSTs) that would be fine, ie using the same knobs that the mixer users… it’s a nice look, and doesn’t look like hardware. i realise if they were separate VSTs they could not use the same colour settings as Podium’s interface, so maybe a default grey/silver could be used with the green highlighted knobs

    Another option is to make the VST plugins work only in Podium, with only the signal processing done in the plugins, and the UI code built into Podium. There are some technical advantages to this approach.

    I think this option would work the best – it would also mean that the plugins would adopt the colours used by Podium, correct? That would look nice and consistent.

    regarding paying 50euros for the synth/effects add on: it’s a question of what people would get for their money, and the actual quality of the synths/effects. what synths/effects will be provided? will the compressor and eq be transparent and smooth? will all the plugs be full featured?

    I suppose you have the question the value of the plugins, really. What are these plugins for? Are they meant to be really simple, just to demonstrate how to use plugins in Podium in example projects, but not necessarily with good sound quality? Or, are they going to the reliable excellent sounding plugins that could be used without thinking in lots of projects? Obviously the second path would be alot more time consuming.

    I’d like to you remind you of an idea I had a while ago and posted about. The idea is to get permission to use third party free plugins in podium, which could be bundled with Podium (or, links provided to download them – maybe a new section of the Guide is needed which would cover example projects). This would increase the exposure of these free plugins to the benefit of their developers, while saving you time in building new plugins. Some names that come to mind are PolyIblit, the smartelectronix plugs
    http://www.smartelectronix.com/ (there’s an EQ, compressor and delay in there somewhere) and there are many more out there. Are you familiar with FruityLoops Studio? I’m pretty sure the MDA suite of plugins come bundles with FruityLoops, so you could follow a similar path…

    And finally, it’s got Frits behind it. Frits will not dry you out like Jules has. For as long as this site’s been up (about 2 years now I think) Frits has been answering everyone’s questions and fixing everyone’s little issues with their weird-ass plugins (sory guys hahha) every day, non stop. The boy never takes a break. Check out the version history…see the dates between versions and the massive features of each one. Frits is determined to make this happen, he’s responsible, and he’s got the serious coding skills to implement the top-tier features…he WAS the first on the block to do 64-bit mixing, you know

    @darcyb62
    : one more thing to reiterate Frits’ committment to Podium, and developing it further. Just read Frits’ blurb on the Contact page…

    Podium is a labor of love which I have been working on since 1990. It all started during my student years where Podium saw the light of day on the Amiga computer. Over the years Podium has gone through many transformations until finally evolving into something that I felt was fit for public release. The Zynewave company was created in 2004 for this purpose.

    you beat me to it Frits, I was gonna say the same thing 😉

    @suges
    : you made me laugh and laugh (because it rang true so well!), great post 8)

    @darcyb62
    : I’ll add my 2 cents. I own licences for Podium, Tracktion, energyXT and used to use Muzys. I only use Podium, all the time. The only edge that Tracktion has over Podium IMO is audio clip support, which is better in Tracktion at the moment because each audio clip is treated as an object and can have separate fade ins/outs, gain etc and I think multiple sample rates are supported. But that’s it, Podium wins hands down in every other way IMO. And, Frits has said he’ll be adding audio clips fades etc at some point. To be honest, I’m getting by alright without audio clip fades/gain control, as I can always edit audio files in third party wave editors if the need arises.

    And I wouldn’t worry too much about losing FinalMix. There are alternatives out there which I know/or have heard sound as good 🙂

    You know that’s funny… I have no qualms stepping on to a car lot and driving off have spent a few 10’s of thousands of dollars, but here I am arguing with myslef over this. My argument is 3 pronged:

    1) Do I stick with Tracktion? It does most of what I want but I have been coming across some quircks that are becoming more and more annoying. (Note: Tracktion has cost me about $100)
    2) Do I go to Podium? Looks pretty good. I want to do a song from start to finish to really see how the workflow compares to Tracktion. I will miss Final Mix which is a Tracktion only VST though.
    3) Do I take a more significant purchase and move to Cubase or Cakewalk or even Pro Tools?

    Money isn’t so much the issue but getting the product that will work best for me is. I’ve even considered moving off the PC platform altogether and going with Mac, but 1 sweet little VSTi has stopped me from that so far.

    Cheers…

    sell your Tracktion licence on something like KVR, buy Podium, and then buy another plug to replace FinalMix, eg FinalPlug

    by the way, have used offline bounce quite a few times now with different plugs and it’s all worked perfectly so far
