perhaps that some functions will be implemented for the summer ?
I certainly hope so. Particularly the collapsed track meta event is high on my list.
Hi Frits,
Any feeling about those points ?
(just to organize my work for the next months…)
New ‘export segment…’ command in the sound editor file menu, which will save the selected segment and channels to a new wave file.
yepeee !
And the possibility to export only the selected channels is great (and so simple to do) !
You know, the sound editor is really one of the best that we could find in all multitrack softwares.
I’ve used it a lot these last months, and the cut/copy/paste by channel and the wave draw are incredible features, that would nearly be a sufficient reason to buy Podium for people who work in multichannel.
When there will be some more options, like gain and fades processings and of course plugins, it will be the first one !
Thanks.
– ripple edits
Premier has some nice tools that allow you to select all clips beyond or behind the clip you select (ripple selecting so to speak). Thus creating or closing ‘holes’ an arrangement does not require you to be zoomed out to see the whole arrangement.
Support for these kind of things in podium would be good (if it doesn;t always exist).
Sure, moving sections in Podium is one of the trickiest thing !
I spend a lot of time to zoom out / select / invert selection / zoom in etc…
So a new option in the edit menu with “select all from cursor” will be a great relief !
Also, actually, adding or removing events from a selection can be only made one by one with the Shift key ?
The possibility to control-drag-select several events at a time to do this will be much appreciated π
Sorry for the “Go”, my internal brain units converter is not very reliable π
I promise that I will pay more attention to this in the future !
I’ll see if I can implement the ‘export as mono files’ command.
OK, it will help a lot !
But you have time : october will be perfect for me π
Thanks.
When you open the Windows Task Manager, do you have two ‘CPU Usage History’ panels? Do both panels show similar percentages when Podium is playing?
Yes.
In the previous version, the second graph was always lower than the first one. Now the second shows an activity which is more or less equal to the first.
I don’t understand. Are you saying that audio file streaming/recording is improved with this release?
For recording I don’t know, but yes, it seems to be the case.
The problem that I have described (short holes that jump from one track to another when the average CPU indicator is correct, about 50 or 60 %) occurs much less often.
A passage of which I had never been able to hear all the tracks at the same time is now read correctly. Nice !
I was surfing your site, but could not find any mp3 files. Do you have any links to examples of your music, preferrably in stereo downmixes?
no, sorry Frits, you will have to make the travel !
You can hear a translations in 5.1 channels only (from a 16 channels concert music made last year) on this page :
http://concert.a.domicile.free.fr/concert1.htm
The file is encoded in wma 9 pro and can play the 5.1 channels in streaming, and of course, you will need a surround installation…
The stereo downmix will be done automaticaly, but it will be of little interest compared to the original version π
The work which I am making these months will be played in january in a concert at Radio France / Paris.
Everybody is invited !
I was not at home these last days, so I’ve not worked a lot with this new version, but some things look to be better with my 3.2 GHz HT :
– with the 1.37, each time I was starting to play the CPU indicator was hitting the 100 %, and its background was always pink > it is no more the case
– I have not noticed a special CPU average consumption difference, perhaps 2 or 3 percents less, but the CPU indicator goes less often to 100 % and there is less clicks (but there were more in the 1.37 than in the 1.36)
– there is less “holes” in tracks due to “disc streaming issue” (?)
I have not yet tried to bounce.
Hi,
Difficult to answer this question!
The list of the future developments is long, and each element has its interest thereβ¦
One of the best things with Podium, it is the confidence which Frits gave us towards his work, and the insurance that with time each one of these points will be carefully studied and certainly integrated.
It is thus enough to be patient (difficult!) and to leave him its priorities.
Thus my answer should be: “I’m happy to leave it to Frits to decide”.
In an other hand, the optimization of the audio engine is obviously one of the first priorities, and the recent improvements which hi has made to graphic management showed at which point that was important.
So another answer could be: “Engine related development should be next”.
But, as a daily user of Podium, I must recognize that what makes me practically suffer at each second, is some aspects of the environment user (keyboard and mouse shortcuts, zoom and scroll, automations etc).
Thus my vote was finally: “Lets have more UI related development”.
Whatever the result of this poll will be, I must say that what I am doing with Podium can’t simply be done in any other host, so Frits, continue like this, it will be OK π
Hi Frits,
I am very happy for you !
Do you think that the changes in the code will also influence Podium’s behaviour with Hyperthreading processors ?
I know that the technique is different from dual core, but perhaps is there also a reason for the differences that I have reported on my P4 HT ?
It would be nice…
Yet another test on my laptop Centrino 1,3 GHz with ASIO4All (Realtek).
In Podium, Nuendo and Bidule :
– 4 tracks / files players with 5.1 audio files (16 bits / 48 kHz)
– 4 heavy 5.1 plugins (multiFX)
– output to a 5.1 bus
The results are less different because of the high CPU usage taken by the plugins.
– Podium : nearly frozen, the play head is updated at about a 2 seconds rate and the CPU indicator often goes to 100 %, which causes interrupts in the sound. Windows Task Manager is 100 %.
– Bidule : the DSP indicator is about 90 % but the files are played and processed without any dropout. The Task Manager is at 100 %.
Nuendo 2 : its Performance bar is around 80 % and it plays well, the Task Manager is about 90 %.
This suggest me that, perhaps, the huge difference which is shown with the other computer and project is due to the streaming of the audio files, since the plugins which are used are not so heavy ?
It would confirm what I have told you in another post, that drop outs occurs in Podium when playing 5 or 6 16 channel audio files, with no plugin, and when the CPU was correct (about 50 %).
I have also noted that these drop outs are “sequentially” shared between the tracks, like if a 500 ms hole was jumping from one track to another..
Perhaps this will help you to find the cause ?
I’ve made another test with the sames files and plugins inside Bidule :
– 6 file players with 16 channels audio files (the same ones)
– 6 16 i/o plugins (the sames too)
– one plugin on the master to route the 16 channels into the two RME cards
– same buffer at 2048
The results are very similar to those from Nuendo :
– DSP indicator : 18 % stable
– Drive indicator : 27 %
– the Task Manager varying around 12 %
What GHz speed is your CPU?
P4 3,2 GHz Hyperthreading.
I’ve ran Podium on only “one CPU thread” and it gives the same kind of results.
I have only noticed that when I run Nuendo or Bidule, the two CPU graphs show the same use, instead of when I run Podium the second one is a little higher then the firts one (10 % ?). It doesn’t seem to be significant.
Could you email me the project file?
Done.
If I understand you right: You have a plugin that can hold a certain number of presets in a bank. This plugin supports switching between the programs with MIDI program change commands. You want to edit the presets in the bank and recall these at certain points on the timeline. If so, assign a bank library preset on the track and keep the sync button enabled so Podium always stores changes you make in the plugin. I assume you have created a program change parameter that you then either automate with curves or with parameter events on the timeline. This should work. You won’t be able to select the individual VST program from Podium, so the plugin editor have to implement its own preset navigator and preset rename functionality.
Thank you Frits for these explanations.
I understand now how the Library preset bank is functionning.
I think that I can do with it.
The only little drawback, is that there is actually no preset navigator and rename functionality inside the plugins I use.
I will add a simple navigator in mines, but it will be more a problem for third party plugins…
I assume you have created a program change parameter that you then either automate with curves or with parameter events on the timeline
I use actually an automation curve since I have not succeded to use the parameters events. Is this possible to use them in the current version ? They will be perfect.
Perhaps that a new command like “Update all Presets from Library”, in the Presets Inspector, will do it ?
Or a drag and drop between the Program Presets and the Library Presets will allow to edit them and to replace the old ones in an easier manner than actually ?
hmmm…
So, if I have well understood, there is no real way to work with a certain number of Programs that can be edited, and selected along a track with MIDI Program changes, other that what I have described at the begining, and that is very time consuming π
