It’s good to know, that empirically, your musicianship is more valid.
Instruments don’t have to be material objects. 2 hours a night can be used to hone skills on a virtual instrument.
Art is not a quality inherent in something; rather in how that thing is perceived.
Others are welcome to study classic forms/strictures. I’m impatient and rather dive into composing with my own sensibilities. For better or worse, harmonic theory, audio technology, production techniques and listening, are skills in concurrent development. I rarely approach writing with a tonal concept (pop artist’s musical idea). More a case of ‘I wonder where this path leads?’
Nodal doesn’t automatically yield usable material. It requires human intervention. A session with it feels very much like a partnership. Configure… audit… configure… audit…
And yes, the machine logic can be discerned. Mostly a product of the rigid timing. Snap can be toggled off but a network’s recursion will always have the same timings. Ultimately it only plays what you tell it to play. ‘Generative’ is probably a misleading term.
The demos, on Nodal’s site, are simplistic but some users have made rich, complex and moving music. It is possible to create networks which play sectional and instrumental changes. It can be a headache to construct though.
I’d love to have had years of developing muscle memory, or the mental database to write music on paper, but life had other plans. It tainted me with the notion that music can simply be manipulated sound.
Someone’s always bemoaning the depth of proper understanding found in successive generations. Yet somehow humanity progresses.
p.s. @4mica: MIDI i/o can be tricky but I assure you that reliable playback with Podium is possible. If you’d like a walkthrough, I’m happy to elaborate.
Thanks Frits 😀
LOL… I confess… I have no stamina 😳
Nucleum Songs Parade is still active. So all are welcome to post links.
Zynewave is also on Facebook.
Also, we have a SoundCloud group for finished works, called Podium Poppets.
70 tracks : 20 contributors : 52 members !!! 😀
Stats. as of 28 July 2013
Your control of Nucleum, in X run.pod is impressive, apiekarczyk!
You’re right, Sobaka, multi-take recording of MIDI and ReWire client output is currently not supported in Podium.
Welcome joemans.
Theoretically, Podium should be able to send MIDI messages and parameter control to iDrum, regardless of whether it is in an instrument or fx slot. iDrum should also defer to the host (Podium’s) tempo.
If tracks in iDrum are mapped to their own MIDI channels, you should be able to have control over them with Podium.
Before getting ahead of myself, may I suggest you read through the MULTITIMBRAL & MULTIPLE IO PLUGINS section in the guide to ensure you’ve configured the plugin correctly.
Also, have a look at some of the videos collated here to see demonstrations.
I apologise for not installing iDrum and giving you a more definitive answer. Thing is, my toolkit is already more than sufficient, and I loathe to be on yet another developer’s mailing list.
That said, iDrum appears to be a powerful multi-sampler!

I have offered my services as a (free) – Beta tester to… Zynewave…
Beta releases are accessible in the VIP Lounge. Suggestions and discussion on Podium’s development is made there and in the ‘Future’ sub-forum.
More generally, bug reports and feature requests can be made in any thread.
Use ‘Audition on Focus Track’ in the File Browser’s drop menu.
When you click on an audio file (*.wav/*.aiff), it will play through the selected track. Make a track with no fx to audition samples dry.
I was going to suggest, if you have fx on the Master track(1), to unhide the Audio Out slot(2)…
… but this doesn’t yield auditioning as expected.
Placing audio files on the unhidden Audio Out track lane(3), however, will bypass fx in child tracks. Use that lane for your dry reference sample(s).
In principle it is best to leave fx slots on the Master track empty. Use sub-mix group tracks to work with independent streams before they’re sent to the soundcard device.
Hello readytowok,
The address of your setup folder is:
…Users(YOUR USERNAME)AppDataRoamingZynewavePodium
I’m not sure why Setup>Restore Default Setup doesn’t work for you?!
Here is the default setup and an alternate configuration file (my setup):

I love all the configuration and editing possibilities in Podium – it’s such a nicely written program – but the over complication with plug-ins , routing and midifiles really puts me off – sorry
You’re welcome mickwest1, I enjoy tackling queries relating to Podium. On the face of it, your concerns seemed easy to address, but soon it was apparent there are some bugs in functionality.
I too like using multiple MIDI tracks for one instrument. It provides visual clarity for different sections.
I’ve also used energyXT and enjoyed the experience. You’re right, routing is a breeze. Patching in a modular environment is the bees knees! It’s such a pity that the developer appears to have dropped off the face of the Earth. I also think the mixer is redundant, in XT, and has some issues.
Use of MIDI files, in Podium, is a relatively new feature. I have little experience with them but, coincidentally, have exported one out of XT and loaded it with Podium. The MIDI file was of the whole arrangement. When imported, Podium created sufficient tracks with all the timeline events (notes & automation).
Instruments were assigned to the tracks automatically too. The plugins selected by Podium were the ones first listed in the device panel.
Personally, I too find routing in Podium to be a little complicated. But writing with it to be fluid, direct, unencumbered, intuitive, unique, versatile and satisfying. The sequencer tools are very useful and the whole thing is beautiful to look at.
I wish you well on your search for the DAW you love. Feeling comfortable, while editing, is crucial.
Keep Podium installed and explore it from time to time. You can use Rewire, in the DAW you find, to access work you’ve made in Podium.
Happy hunting 🙂

… multiple tracks to a single plugin instance…
Hi mickwest1,
I had a bit of a rummage ’round and it seems there are some issues with recording such a setup.
If it’s any use to you, here’s some info. on multiple tracks to a single plugin…
Non-global instances:
Global instances (a):
I mistakenly configured the track ‘MIDI channel 01’ to have gain/pan controls. #-o
Global instances (b):
I hope this addresses your query.

On SoundCloud I’ve already found something really interesting…
I’m curious, do tell…

…but the website has some very strong restrictions for uploading and sometimes it does not allow me to publish the track even with the consent of the “owning” user.
Two of my friends have had similar issues. One gets an error message 30 seconds into an upload. The other had a track removed on suspicion of plagiarism.
I’m guessing that SoundCloud scans uploads and compares it to a database of acoustic fingerprints. Personally, I’m pessimistic about the enforcement of intellectual property rights. It restricts musical culture, penalising artists like Cassetteboy and Girl Talk. I’m also skeptical about owning ideas.
I’ve noticed a few effeminate usernames, but primarily assume this forum to be genderless.
I admire your directness, MLS.
