Happy new year to everyone around here! May 2011 be a good year for Podium 😀

Podium stores a plugin setup with each project you have. If you have added some plugins after you’ve created your project, you probably want to update/rebuild this setup. Look at the project page and select “rebuild and load plugin database” from the devices submenu. Alternatively you can just import these 4 plugins into the current project with the appropriate buttons. Remember to save the project after doing this.

I think there is no clip color but you can have track colors. Take a look at the inspector panel if you haven’t discovered this yet.

Hi. I’m sorry but I’m afraid I don’t get it. What exactly is your problem? Could you try to reformulate it?

    Hi,

so you have recorded some midi notes, right? There is no need to bounce anything to record another track but…
Do you actually hear any of these notes in the arrangement in Podium when you play them back?
    If you don’t hear anything:
You probably haven’t assigned any virtual instrument to your recorded track. You need something (like a synthesizer) to play these notes. You could either route them back into your external keyboard (if it isn’t just a midi keyboard) or play them back through a software instrument. Of the latter there are thousands out there. You could try Nucleum (http://www.zynewave.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1569) or something like Synth1 (http://www.geocities.jp/daichi1969/softsynth/Synth1V112.zip). Download them and unpack them into a single folder. Point Podium to this folder via Setup->Preferences->Plugins (add it to the “VST plugin scan folders”).
Afterwards return to the project start page and rebuild your plugin database (Devices box->Rebuild and Load…).
Now return to your arrangement containing the recorded track and select one of these instruments as source in the track header.
Hopefully, you should now hear something when playing the arrangement.

I hope this is a starting point. If you’d like to know more, refer to the “Devices” section in the guide or ask 🙂

    Hi Gino,

AFAIK Podium currently does not support resampling. Hence, all imported audio files should be using the samplerate the project is using. I think Frits has this already on his todo-list.

The second thing sounds like a bug. If it is reproducable like you already said, please provide some detailed steps so Frits can reproduce it too. I’m sure he’ll fix it as soon as he can.

    Hi batman,

the DSK plugins are known to be difficult. It is very likely that this is the plugins fault. I would strongly suggest to take a look at other freeware plugins. There has been a recent discussion somewhere here.

I think it all comes down to a binary decision: Shall Podium (and all its derivatives) be targeted at current professional users or not?

If the answer is “Yes” then the following points are to be considered:
Podium already has a tendency towards professionalism as its user interface is oriented at the big players (you all know them) and their current workflow. Functionality-wise it lacks some things professional audio engineers/producers need. A non-exhaustive “professional” list may be:

      1) MIDI Plugins
      2) Better audio editing tools (inkl. time-stretch)
      3) A mixing desk like workflow and improved mixing tools (this includes built-in phase inverter, mono, improved track EQ and dynamics)
      4) Improved workflow, esp. in the arrangement editor (configurable key- and mousebindings, support for MIDI controllers, better editing tools)

Personally I would love to see these things happen, especially with Frits ability to put things like these in an esthetic, clean and nice working UI.

    If the answer was “No”:
Podium is currently not a “one click funtoy” (IL users may forgive me: like Fruity). If this is the target then either a lot of work has to be done with Podium or a new thing like Mobium has to be started. As a new generation of engineers/producers may have different needs, it may be the best to leave Podium as it is and work on something new. But:

Personally I don’t see a bright future for all the iOS stuff. The whole system is way too restrictive and other platforms (namely linux) are much more configurable (be it software or hardware).
Anyway these mobile devices offer a lot of compelling flexibility and of course mobility but I think we don’t even have a use for that. I know a lot of people having an iOS device but noone has a single use case for the device. They just wanted to have it without knowing how they are going to use it.

I have a MacBook pro and an iPad at my disposal and I’ve bought some creative tools for the iPad. I have to admit that it isn’t fun at all. I have recognized, that I have no use for these tools except when going by train (which doesn’t happen really often) and even then it takes 10min and I’m bored. The only thing the iPad is good at is surfing some webpages and maybe reading one or two emails. That’s all.

Also I can’t imagine any producer who is working in the studio with an iPad or something like that. But a mobile device with a touch interface would be a perfect remote/input device for a flexible and professional DAW! In my opinion, this is the only interesting use case for such a device (when talking about audio related work).
An audio engineer could directly work with the musicians in the recording room while starting the record or monitoring the meters. There are a lot of interesting use cases to discover here.

Well, I could help testing those builds if you like.

At the time I think Conquistador tested the x64 build I made, and it didn’t work. So I left it there. I need to run it in a debugger to find where it goes wrong.

I may be able to do that too but probably you would have to provide a build with debugging information compiled in. At least a build with some symbols in it would do so I can provide some more or less valid stack traces.

Well, I could help testing those builds if you like. I have no personal need for these builds but if I can be of any use, I’d like to help 🙂

Sorry DigitalJedi, there is no x64 version and I guess it is not coming in the next months.
I my opinion there is no use case for an x64 version. Most people just don’t seem to like the “* 32” comment in the windows task manager 😆

    Hi mikeparr

I guess that these questions are simple for experienced users:

    1. I’ve created a new project, and an arrangment.
One track is drums, created with a GM drum plugin in the drum editor, and is 1 bar long.
I’m not sure how to loop this to experiment with it.

There should be a loop button in the transport panel. Alternatively you can press l (L) and a green loop range should appear in the timeline of the arrangement editor. You can drag the loop range handles to fit your needs. Be aware that the handles take the current snap setting into account. If my memory is right, you can have different snap settings in the arrangement and in the midi editor. Take a look here http://www.zynewave.com/wiki/doku.php?id=guide:editors#timeline

    @mikeparr wrote:

The other track is piano – I painted some notes in with the editor.
When I play it, it stops after the first bar, even though notes exist in bar 2.
(Bar 2 is shaded dark). As far as I can see, I’ve not set up any time constraints, but may have acicdentally done somethinhg.

This sounds a bit odd and I don’t really have an answer to that. AFAIK there is no option that would stop playback after one bar. Maybe you can provide a screenshot?

    @mikeparr wrote:

    2. The more general question is
-what is the best way to create a drum pattern with variations – for example 11 bars of a regular pattern, and then 1 bar different. Not sure how I duplicate bars in the arrangement editor.

I think the easiest way would be:
    1. Assign a drum plugin to an empty track
    2. Create a note sequence in the arrangement editor of the desired length (let’s say one bar). You can do this by recording the sequence or by painting it with the editor tools.
    3. Create/edit/record the drum pattern.
    4. Create phantom copies of that sequence in the arrangement editor with Ctrl + LeftClick + Drag.
    5. You should have n copies of the sequence by now. If you edit one of them, all will be changed. If you like to have a variation in pattern 4, rightclick on it and convert it to a unique copy.
    6. Now you can edit pattern 4 freely and add the desired variation.

You can do that. Take a look at the Podium User Guide. There is a paragraph in the “Getting Started” chapter about that (english version).

If you previously have experienced a noticeable delay when exiting Podium, I would appreciate if you could try this beta and check if the delay is gone. It should now exit instantaneously. It’s no longer necessary to add Podium.exe to your antivirus exclusion list.

Works fine here. Podium closes now almost instantaneously.
