I’ve been browsing through documentation for Cubase, Logic and others, and I have not found info on whether insert plugins on a channel strip are processed pre or post fader. Does anyone know more about this?

i know SAW and Reaper let you choose between post and pre on insert. I don’t remember where they default?

i also thought that “standard” is pre for insert and post for send……

    very cool Frits!

i bought a pawn shop (do they have those in Denmark) stratocaster copy and amplifier at 16. the guitar was in such bad shape it could not be tuned. which was probably o.k.. because i could not tune it! 😉

i bought a mel bay book that showed a few progressions. D-C-G sort of thing.

man i had the bug. all i did was play that damn thing. 3 months later i had enough money for a gibson sg. a few folks showed me a few more things and i simply worked the information i had to death.

at 17 we had a band doing allman bros, zz top, rock stuff like that. it has been a long love affair…..and it is not over……

my mistake. under mixer view i had compact header still checked. man, i thought i had seen this view before.

the space on the mixer header gets to full with a few fx on a track so i think hiding the mixer strip and using expand mode still makes most sense for me. i will use the inspector to view fx and open an fx.

    thanks

frits, for what it is worth, my only problem with the compact mode for fx names is…… for all of my digital recording life the fx names have been in the mixer view. most recording software that i am familiar with actually lists the name of the fx on the mixer. for example, if track 3 is a guitar track and i have four fx on it the mixer that corresponds with the guitar track will list by name the fx starting at the top of the mixer, like so-

    sonalksis eq
    sonalksis comp
    waves super tap
    urs blt

have you considered that or is there a reason you feel podium should buck the trend?

    thanks

You can’t hide the gain/pan controls in the track lane headers. You can however use the “show pan and gain sliders instead of dials” option in the tracks region properties dialog.

yeah, i knew that. i was just curious if in compact mode i could hide the gain and pan in the lane header. that would be cool because it looks sleeker and you don’t really need the dials on the track lane headers too.

i think maybe i should be using compact mode. as you said, i get a view of all of the fx on a track which i really like. i wonder if in the future you would consider having the gain and pan dials, or sliders, in the track lane headers optional?

    thanks

so i am looking at compact mode because it seems to do what i want with fx in the track view. however, can i have the track view show no gain or pan dials but have them in the mixer view? this seems to help the track view look a little cleaner but still alllow adjustments to pan and volume in the mixer view.

    thanks

If the only reason you show the mixer strip is to see more of the effect name, isn’t the best solution for you an option to specify the width of the mixer strips? That way you’ll be able to see the full effect name even with the mixer strip hidden.

yes. or any option that would allow me to look at a track and see the name of each fx on the track….in expanded mode.

frits, if i open the inspector, chose zynewave eq, and drag it to a guitar track it will show up in the mixer as a track before the guitar track.

i have enough screen space that i prefer to see the fx track with fx name before the track it is associated with.

i can change the hide mixer strip one track at a time but maybe there should be a place to modify this behavior? if i leave it like it is i have no immediate visual of what the plug in is on the track. the small bar on the track itself does not let you know anything except there is an fx on it.

or, are you saying you think each fx should have it’s own track? that will, however, take up quite a bit of screen space in the track arrangement view.

The mixer strip is by default hidden though, so the effect track is stacked on top of the audio track.

Frits, do i have to do this one track at a time (right click on track, uncheck hide mixer strip)? or is there a single place to change this default?

    thanks

You mean the “Insert Effect Track” submenu? I tried that here, and the track appears as expected in the mixer. The mixer strip is by default hidden though, so the effect track is stacked on top of the audio track.

the mixer is not hidden when i drag an fx to a track……….

so i just need to change the default….

    thanks

Frits, if I right click on a track, in expanded mode, and insert an fx it does not show up in mixer view. if i use the inspector and drag the fx to the track it does show up in the mixer.

    why is this?
