FYI — I’ve been playing around a bit with the latest edition of REAPER (4.13), and I just wanted to say that it supports WASAPI.

So, of course, I had to go fool around with it; I had to try it. Right next to its selection on the list it clearly says “(experimental)” and that should have been my warning.

Well, I did try it and it locked up and froze REAPER so bad I had to do a hard reboot just to get REAPER off the screen. THEN, naturally, it’s stuck with WASAPI listed as driver in the Prefs., so I can’t open/start Reaper at all — freezes as soon as it loads it. I had to fix it by going into AppData. The only other alternative would have been a full scan uninstall and then clean reinstall (too time consuming).

Okay, so it’s all fixed now but I’ll never click on WASAPI ever again. I’m just posting this as food for thought for ideas of going after this in a future Podium release. I sure won’t be trying it in Podium unless I hear ONLY gushing, wonderful reviews!

Hey, Kozaberger, i listened to your post on SoundCloud. Just wanted to say that the recording quality is pretty darn good, so you’re obviously off to a good start with your use of Podium. I’m rater new here with this DAW myself, just this week beginning to feel completely comfortable with using this software. I hope you will post more music when you get more tunes finished.

Regarding the voice situation, I relied on lead singers for my various bands for years and most were rather good, but this arrangement was not without its problems. I had a couple of them “reinturpret” and essentially butcher my original tunes, one crapped out on us at the last minute because his girlfriend didn’t want him performing live in front of other gals, etc., etc. So I began on the long hard road of learning to sing professionally. It ended up being about 10 times harder than getting good on a guitar, and it seemed to take forever just to get to a place where I felt the quality of my vocals started to become acceptable. I think that many musicians who don’t have to sing never fully understand what a challenge it is.

Some very good questions you have there. That’s kind of why I posted what I did. I don’t know the answers to either, but It almost always is some kind of strange incompatability regarding the soundcard and whatever else is going on. Also, the audio processing often figures into this. This area is sometimes the weak link on computers. What’s worse, sometimes it’s all integrated in the circuit so there’s no trying other soundcards and so on. The best way I’ve solved these sorts of problems is by process of elimination, by finding out what’s NOT causing your troubles, one item at a time. If I think of what else it might be, I’ll repost.

I may be totally wrong about this, but my own experiences and everywhere else I come across the same two things:

    1.) It’s always the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth (which happens to be a Roland product, if you ever wondered);

2.) The ASIO4ALL doesn’t like YOU, doesn’t like your soundcard; is just having a really bad day; its dialog window will not close or it refuses to close in the system tray.

I used to wish someone would kindly offer as freeware an ASIO with very low latency that worked with any and all soundcards and devices that don’t require an extremely specialized hookup,

Not much of a choice when I went to buy my first laptop middle of 2010. And I did want the Windows 7 anyway, ’cause the look of it is beautiful with all that Aero glass. It does everything I want, too, without being bloated with to many features. Like, I don’t have the touch screen and I don’t want it. I’ve seen Windows 8 and I’m just not interested.

I like running the 32-bit Podium and 32-bit plugs on a 64-bit. For me it’s ideal until the entire world is 64-bit compatible. And that’s why I will probably never run Linux, either, although I do like that OS. But almost nothing goes with it, and bridging is something I avoid all around like the plague.

I notice Podium is not so much of a CPU and RAM hog as some other DAWs, so I won’t switch to Best Performance mode unless I’m running more that 20 tracks and/or overloaded with plug-ins. I’ve got an average power dual core, 4 RAM with 4 more I can add, and some 360 gigs of free space on a 5400rpm disk. Podium has been working so smoothly, and it’s really a total relief after some unpleasant experiences with another over-rated (I believe) DAW brand.

I’d accept a MAC if you gave me a really expensive higher model, but really I am more comfortable with your average well-made laptop PC.

If anything, my dream move is to buy another laptop and dedicate it to music production only. That looks like two years away right now.

I run out into some decent powered monitors and a very average set of Maxell headphones that just happen to be remarkably accurate.

A guitarist, I run three different Digitech systems into Podium to record — ultra-low latency and many top-notch effects pre-added and processed before they hit the track. I often run the vocal mic through the Digitech stuff as well.

Now that I have the licensed version of Podium, and I ditched my annoying last DAW, I really have to say I’m finally in Recording Heaven and fully intend to stay put!

I play several instruments — none nearly as well as the guitar. I can get by on keyboards to record parts well enough. But in almost I’ve band I’ve had I always hear the same stock commands:

    “STEP AWAY FROM THE DRUMS!”

Kim, thanks for the files, I’ll check them out. One of the features of the Bonham set is that it has a squeak on the foot pedal of the kick I think it is, just as can be heard on the first two LPs clearly. That makes sense, because it is a careful studio-quality sample of his old Ludwig set taken way back in the good old days.

I admire that you would go sample the drums yourself. Do you go all-out and get floor and carpet, under snare, and do a second, distance mic on them? Also, I was wondering, unless you own an actual drum shop, you would be limited in access to the $3k and $4k sets, right? I mean, the rental set from any regular store is likely to sound like doodoo. How do you get access to the world’s greatest sets? That, to me, is the advantage of obtaining professionally made samples. I’ve even had a couple drummers ask me to use their archived samples, which I thought very flattering of them to even care what I was using in my home studio. And if the stores have been renting to kids and amateurs, the sets are gonna need a tuning. Do you go into all that, too, to get a set on tape? I don’t know, man, it makes me tired just thinking about all that trouble. I’m so busy with all the business side of my music that I hardly can make time to play my guitars in the first place!

I’m going to try the SoftDrum, also, so thanks for posting that, too. Somehow I’ve never heard of that one, but from a good look at the UI I’d say they mean business.

Infinitoar — Hey, I forgot to mention — I also had a chance to listen to your “Severed” recently, too. Even though the comments thread is elsewhere, I just wanted to add real quick here that I was rather impressed. I had to chuckle at the one comment I read afterward that stated it was “too loud, too much,” ’cause that was exactly one of the main things I liked about it. Instead of screwing around with a gradual build of the symphonic sound, you came in quick, no fooling around, with what was basically a chordal symphonic onslaught. Nice arrangement, too, because you broke from that into the mellower, moody sections at regular intervals. That added the necessary balance, so you can have the “too much” parts and get full impact from them. I think me favorite feature, tho, was the fadeout ending. Now, most will just do a standard fade in that situation, but instead you dropped in the tinkling chimes or bells at intervals, sort of like saying, ‘okay, here’s the fade, I’m ending it, but I’ve got a couple more points to make.

Note that, like kim said on the other thread, I’m one of those Guitar Dudes myself, and all of my tunes are totally guitar and/or vocals heavy and oriented, but your tune is more the thing I will listen to in order to clear all the guitar noise out of my head once in a while.

Hey there, Infinitoar! Cool to meet you. I’ve read a couple of your threads already. The laptop you mentioned has almost the same specs as the one I bought in middle of last year. The graphics and sometimes the audio used to get stressed out by Cubase. I’m not sure why because they rated the dozen most-used DAWs and Cubase was only a little higher than the average for processor and RAM consumption. The good news is that no other DAW I’ve used (and pretty intensely) has caused a freeze or crash on my computer. Podium works very well with a few tracks and several VSTs loaded.

With the GPU issue, you know, most laptops come automatically now with whatever they decide to put in it, the least would be a 500Meg dedicated graphics chip. Mine came with that by nVidia. Starting this year, however, I think the standard is now 1 gig. You just get what you get, depending on the PC you want. They are thinking less about musicians’ needs, and it is all about the online gaming users.

Thanks for the hello! The license thing just came back to me approved and all a couple minutes ago. I’m really psyched, and I’m real happy to be over here with the Podium crowd. Over at Steinberg/Cubase many seemed more like frustrated tech-heads, but here everyone seems more hip and interested in creativity and the projects they’re doin. I didn’t come here to own some prestigious name; I came to Podium because the software is so incredibly cool, works so well, and inspires me to do better music.

Hey, ms, I’m still real new to Podium, too, but I might suggest something I’ve learned already. When you have MIDI in and outs all hooked up and working it can sometimes block or interfere with the audio, depending on if you are using certain ASIOs. This is not a bug, just something to be mindful of.

When I am done using MIDI, I will disconnect that stuff and check to make sure my audio is set right and then return to full audio playback. If you can post more details someone might be able to figure out what’s going on. My hunch so far is that it has to do with what audio driver(s) you use.

Someone else will know more about the issue regarding your plugins.
