I suggest we limit to 24bit files to keep it manageable and work within a CC Creative Commons licensing model.

I do all my projects in 24bit due to most of them being used in film and video. But wouldn’t 16bit files make better use of bandwidth/storage in the long run?

Frits, would it be possible to move this thread into the VIP Lounge or should we just start a new one?

Also, the idea of browsing collabs is neat. I think in a collab environment it would also be nice if one could export a group track with all the settings for the plugs and automation intact. Maybe without the ins and outs mapped because that would change user-to-user.

As well, just in case it doesn’t work out on Frits’ end, I checked on my end and I have 2gb that I can donate to this type of endeavor. And there are no limits on bandwidth for me. Access would be via ftp as well, with the idea of moving all the final projects over to Zynewave’s server.

Listening to your music made me think about finishing the lyrics on a few of my own. I gonna try and wrap up 3 of them and get them posted over the weekend.

And on a side note I bookmarked your AP page Sam so I can see what else you add in the future.

In the preferences dialog you can set the folder where you want to save your projects. What needs to remain in the “My DocumentsZynewave Podium Projects” folder is the Library folder. I’ll consider adding an option to move this folder in a future update.

Please do consider this. I never store anything of value to me in the My Documents folder. Why? Let me explain… Years ago, in the middle of a hard drive dying I had to remove the old drive, add a new one and yet get my data off of the old drive. I was a pain in the a__ getting the stuff out of those personal folders. Yet everything else was a breeze. So nowadays I have to back up all those files that a few programs insist on putting there (in the MyDoc folder) several times a day, just in case. It will put a smile on my face when you add that option for users.

    Thanks

sam that is some tasty stuff you have there. If you don’t mind a few comments….

I hear quite a few influences in your tunes some tasty Larry Carltonish style wrapped in some Pink Floyd-Steely Dan type phrases augmented with a touch of sam c.

I might be giving away my age a bit there but I hope you take it as it is meant, cause I like what I’m hearing. Nice imagery. I guess I better wrap up a toon or two and post it so that I can see if I fit in as well 🙂

Well, if we get a few more responses, at least 4 or 5, I think we can work through the other details. I think your suggestion of moving this to the VIP Lounge is a good idea as well.

Maybe once the initial group is gathered we can chime in and vote on which plugs we’ll use.

And initially maybe we could pass around mp3’s until we flesh out the tune(s), using wav’s later for the final mix. I may be able (very probable) to help with the online storage issue.

You know collab work is not a new idea but I think that we could kill a few birds with one stone, so-to-speak. I will post those thoughts in a new thread though since they are not totally in line with the original post.

It would be interesting to round-robin a few tunes and see how bad we suck. Seriously. Either from scratch or a cover. Once we get all the tracks laid down everyone could have a go at mixing it. Then we could post all the mixes and have a good laugh 😉

Honestly, I am surprised at the small offerings of collab work around the net. And I too think that a lot of people don’t post their own work because they think its not up-to-snuff. But I also think a lot of stuff doesn’t get posted because it sits on our comps unfinished. We get an idea but never get around to completing it. Now add to that the idea that a lot of us don’t jam/compose/practice with other musicians and you get this void that should never exist really.

My current inspiration is coming from working with guys in my area that shoot small video stuff and the indie film guys. It makes think outside the box a little since a lot of times there are clear goals for a project. In some ways it makes me sit my creative hat to the side and put on my management & techy hat(s). Also, I have had a chance to dip into the spoken word scene a bit and shoot a few performances. Total distraction that clears my head and lets me get back to things with a clear slate. Music wise I haven’t had a lot of inspiration floating my way. I’ve been vibing to some trip-hop/chillout stuff but nothing to get real excited about.

On a funny side note, I was in the car the other day and a Beach Boys tune was playing, I think it was Good Vibrations. I’m not a BB fan but I let it play just for the change of pace it brought to the drive. I found myself picking apart the arrangement and wondering hmmm, how’d they do that? I mean really, how did they get each sound and harmony to come out that way? And I started thinking about trying to reproduce a whole bunch of songs/sounds just to see if I could. This may be a my new thing this summer. Too funny…

The idea that users would pay for additional functionality could keep customers around and not looking over the fence so much. It could also appeal to the “less is more” crowd, as this group would have the option of running things on the lean side with no add-ons, and still knowing that its there if they need to add it in the future. Heck it would take the idea of Projects and Devices to another level.

I don’t know what’s available a this point with Podium and what the future holds. But when I look at Reaktor and the massive library available that goes well beyond the idea of a “soundbank” I’m just left wondering why that approach has not hit the DAW developers. Or has it?

    Any thoughts?

If I understand you correctly I think offering a host in parts Midi, Audio or notation that can be plugged in so to speak is a very good idea. I really expected the Ableton Cycling 74 partnership do deliver that sort of approach. Perhaps they will in future.

I think most devs are not sure if the market really wants it (if they have even thought of it yet) but I am certain the market is there.

There are many audio focused producers, midi and a combination of both so I think the plugin feature approach within reason and delivered carefully (with user feedback) could definitely work…even Microsoft appear to be looking at this very same model for Windows 7.

So it is not really far fetched at all.

First thanks for that link, I wondered how long it would take MS too wake up. A one size fits all approach has been part of the problem for years, IMO. The vast majority of users could get by with an expanded PDA. Seriously. I check my email, the weather, my investments, contacts and a few websites each morning from my iPod touch. And before that it was my PDA. I don’t need a quadcore computer for such tasks. I really hope some of what’s in that article come true and a variety is offered to the development community. Its possible that some folks, maybe even ASUS, might pick up that “minwin” version and include it in some of their new laptops, you know, the ones with no hard drive.

Second, yes, you do understand me correctly. It is quite possible that there will be some cool “roll your own” functionality coming out of that partnership with Ableton & Cycling ’74. And if there was a DAW app out there that allowed for plugins not developed in-house that added functionality, I would be more than tempted to put my programmer’s hat back on and contribute. Maybe for free even…

I think Plugin handling in general is way overdue for an overhaul personally. Mappings / plugin management should be far more user friendly.

Any chance that some day a double click on a track in the track area and/or mixer opens the plugin window instead of the track properties dialog if a plugin is mapped to the track?

This will speed up my workflow greatly. Maybe other Podium users like it too.

    +1 Good idea…
