So, since you seem more impressed, which type are you? 🙂
🙂 I think I like games with depth but I am more into racing games, some puzzle games as well.
I think the basic idea of Natal is brilliant but time will tell how succesful it is. Frankly IMO if I was a game dev I would be very excited by this. I think it will make games much more engaging. The Milo demo illustrates that very well. One could have a game with hundreds of characters like that with a very engaging story line.
Just one example.
Very wide possibilities IMO. 🙂

Also, did this happen with the betas, too, or didn’t you get a chance to try them?
I did try one of the 2.16 betas briefly but I did not try this particular action until recently. I was dragging the navigator left and right from it’s edges when I used one of the 2.16 betas.
How strange! So, does the view jump to the clicked position after recovering, then?
It does and…it does not. It did once but then I tried it a second time and the screen froze up for 30 seconds or more and the view did not jump back to where I wanted it to. The GUI and play cursor simply resumed from the current playback position further down the project timeline.
First things first. I think you are doing a great job of refining Podium. =D>
Further additions to the changelog:
• The installer no longer creates the “Zynewave Podium Projects” folder in the Documents folder. Instead the user is presented with a “project folder preferences” dialog the first time Podium is started. The user can let Podium build the default folders, or configure the folders in the preferences.
Nice!
• Removed the “Relative to project path” option from the sound properties dialog. Sound files are now always referenced with a relative path in the project file, if the sound file is located within the project folder.
Will this solve the problem PDM currently has with audio files being dragged / imported into a project but not being copied to the project folder? :-k
If your answer is no 🙁
…then please consider this additon as a solution. Manually copying imported clips can be very time consuming in PDM.
How about something like this instead…
…that pops up if..
A. You have not saved imported clips into the currently used project folder in PDM.
B. You are importing / dragging in a file into a project.
C. Or why not simply extend the functionality of the Save All Changes command on the Project Menu list to also copy any imported clips to a Project file?
• Multiple VST plugin scan folders can be specified in the preferences dialog.
:D/
• Added “automatically search for missing plugins when loading a project” option to preferences. This option is enabled by default.
Excellent. I wonder though could this idea not be extended to Auto Loading a device set up? I would really make use of this as I have to manually do this at the moment. Less clicks.
• The track inspector embedded in the project window is automatically opened/closed when an arrangement editor is opened/closed.
Makes sense. 🙂
More suggestions…
1. Move to new folder exists but what about Move to existing folder? I would love to avoid having to carefully drag mappings to existing folders. It can be quite tricky to do at the moment on the Devices area of the Start Page.
2. Direct Links to the WIKI tutorials. Presonus Studio one clearly borrowed the PDM Start Page idea, no problem of course as you can return the favour by borrowing the idea of providing a link to Tutorials (WIKI for PDM in this case). 😉 There are a lot of very helpful write ups now in the WIKI. This should help get new users up and running a whole lot faster.
3. Better management of colour presets. Loading and saving. I really think it would be better to add a colour saving option to the bottom of the colours menu. I think there should be a Load and Save Button at the bottom of this menu. That would be far more intuitive than having to make colour tweaks , click ok then go to the Setup menu and scroll all the way down to Save Colour Set Up. It can be much easier surely. I think this idea will place more logical Save / Load buttons for colour presets where they are far more likely to be looked for in the first place.
A user could also set and forget a path for Colour presets to be saved to in Preferences.
4. Download updates from the Start page. The Start Page can be even more engaging, Presonus have a link to download updates right on their start page. Why not Podium? A link to the VIP forum thread where updates can be accessed. Of course if you are not a paid customer you cannot get in. 😉
5. User Option to set an Audio Editor to use. An option to set a path for this in the Preferences area. (Browse for .exe file).

Any possible degradation in performance by using Windows temp folder? Also might it not be easier to wipe (by mistake) when using a Windows utility (maybe)?
It should not degrade performance. Podium keeps the cache files locked while running, so the files cannot be deleted by Windows by mistake.
Ok cool. 8)
The installer tool I’m currently using is very basic, so I don’t think I can control this. I’m going to look for alternative installer solutions in the near future. Why do you want to run the installer as administrator?
Vista can have issues with apps not installed this way. It is a safeguard. So far so good with Podium though but really I would be much happier with an option to install as an administrator.
Possible Bug…
Maybe this has been fixed already in 2.17 but…if you click on either side of the Navigator (during playback) PDM’s (Podiums) gui will freeze up completely. I can hear playback but several seconds pass before the GUI returns to normal. Also playback stopped after the GUI recovered here.
Hi Frits,
Just a quick reminder about FX dragging also…I can definitely double click on an FX and get a duplicate to appear. The behaviour is definitely buggy.
Thanks.

Sale ends today… 🙂

I like (more or less) the moves Microsoft have made with it so far; it looks more polished and the open beta and release candidate idea has me convinced it will be a better product for it. Microsoft would have to do something pretty bad (or have had done something and then it come out into public) for me to change my mind currently.
Yes. Microsoft seem to be trying pretty hard to up the quality and polish stakes with Windows 7. It has been very stable indeed over here. Very impressed.
I would definitely make use of a Linux port should it ever become available. Been dabbling with Linux for years.

The “Sound file cache folder” setting in Preferences can be left blank to use the Windows temp folder. The default setup now uses this instead of the Cache folder previously created by the installer.

• Removed the outdated example projects from the installer.
Good idea but some point a few example projects will have to be offered. 3 or 4 different genres could be covered. I really think adding a zComp to Podium will help that process. In any case people like to hit play and immeadiately hear what a host can do. Demo projects do help. A link to a page could even be offered with some example projects, links to plugins used e.t.c (all free).
That might work well if you cannot bundle free plugins with Podium perhaps to keep the installer size down.
Also when installing Podium it is not possible to install by using the Run as an Administrator command. Can you please change the installer to reflect this? Any thing to help with compatibility and reliability when installing on Vista /W7 can only help. Thanks.
I think I agree. 🙂
Would be very useful. Several hosts have some sort of groove related feature now.

When Windows 7 is released (est. end of 2009) I’ll probably treat myself to a new PC with Win7 64 bit preinstalled. At that point I’ll start working on a 64 bit version of Podium. Until then I think my time is better spent on working on Podium features.
That is probably the best way. While the RC is fully functional until June next year, the full version of Windows 7 (or indeed any Windows version)of course is an even better testing environment for development work. Looking forward to it. 8)

Whilst I would love everything to be 64bit, I think it’s more important to solve the problems that most people will have, and that’s likely to be one or two plugins needing to be 64bit due to memory usage – if this can be achieved sooner in a different fashion, it’s good.
There should be no need to choose between a fully native x64 version of Podium and some way to use x86 plugs inside it. As there are clearly related issues I would assume they would surely be considered for implementation at the same time anyway.
There’s also the issue of ReWire, which doesn’t work under 64bit I think.
A Propellerhead issue. This clearly (and thankfully) has not stopped all the other hosts I listed from moving on with x64 support.
I personally think that Podium has enough to help it ‘keep up’ as it is, without having to go 64bit, especially in the price range – after all, I bought it because I like the way it does the job.
Clearly yes there is plenty to keep any user busy with Podium and indeed IMO it competes very well with other hosts. Just not within the x64 arena. Yet.
In any case we can have the best of both worlds as there is no reason why Podium cannot have two versions. x86 and x64. Any user can simply install the version that suits their needs and supports their platform. That is probably the best way forward and has been offered by other devs already. 🙂

One more minor coment…
The fact that you can drag the right hand side of the zoom area is not very discoverable if it starts zoomed out. Could the slightly darker grey dragable bits (splitter bars) on the right and left sides always be there even when fully zoomed out, i.e. not disappear behind the edges.
I think this would help newbs discover the feature better.
Good point. Some sort of indicator or arrow (to drag) at both edges of the navigator would be very welcome indeed.
Hi koalaboy 🙂
Ultimately it boils down to Podium keeping up (in this area) with other hosts. Without a huge marketing budget features like x64 can add to the overall value of Podium. Leaving Podium as an x86 app for too long (talk less of pemanently) is IMO a very bad idea. Clearly Podium has plenty of catching up to do in this area already.
That gap will increase over time as more software devs with offerings similar to Podium add x64 support to their hosts. There are not many left frankly. I think even Magix have an x64 beta for Samplitude now. Magix of course have more than a few products near Podiums price point.
It might be tomorrow or two years (or more) from now but Podium will have to step up to compete with other hosts in this area at some point. It is being left behind already.
Of course Podium does not have to add every single feature other hosts have but this is quite different IMO as we are talking supporting an OS which many other host, FX, instrument and hardware developers have already embraced.
I think Frits does have to carefully choose where it is best to compete with other hosts and I think he has done a great job so far. The need for x64 support will not fade away though, it will only become even more pressing as time goes on.
It is strange in a way as Podium is ahead of many if not all hosts when it comes to Processor support (32 apparently) but is behind many other hosts when it comes to native x64 support (hosts above, within and below Podiums price point).
Whatever our personal preferrences are Podium must continue to compete with other hosts. It does already and very well, but it is behind in this area (at the moment). 😉
