If you’re familiar with MIDI, then I suppose you’d know most (all?) hosts require the MIDI controller to be on and connected before opening them, for them to recognise and use it.

I’m sure you knew that, so on to my other concern!

It sounds like, after some time, the controller is, perhaps, disconnecting? If you aren’t using a USB device for some time, there’s a chance it’s being put to sleep, I believe. If that happens, Podium may see it as a disconnect, and reconnecting the USB device would presumably mean needing to restart Podium with the device on again.

If you go to Device Manager in Windows 7, and check some of your USB device properties, you’ll find an option that you can disable, whereby Windows can’t power down USB to save power. See if disabling those helps you at all.

In regards to MIDI, I think what is meant is that Podium will only allow one input device in the setup, and one output. But I could be wrong, Frits might have to answer that one.

Hi, I’m not sure if you record notes like that as I insert them using the mouse on the timeline area. Clicking those notes should produce sound though. Is it possible that ASIO4ALL has multiple outputs enabled and that Podium is using the first it finds, which you may not be using?

I would find it hard to believe that any software of this nature would, anywhere in the foreseeable future, rely solely on ARM processors. Other than x86 CPU support, I’m not sure what backwards compatibility you would be worried about losing? I don’t think touchscreens will be necessary for this purpose either, not for quite some time. 🙂

I have to say that Roger Nichols didn’t make it, but bought it from another company, and quite a few people were put out about it, back in the day. I still have the old free version by Elemental. I believe Inspector was essentially untouched in function, but their other plugins were altered I believe? Or maybe it was something to do with authentication or something else. I never touched them after their plugins were bought out and I keep Elemental – Inspector handy all the time with backups to make sure I don’t lose it. 🙂

I don’t even know the real reason “why”, when DDR RAM is cheap, DDR3 is cheap and DDR2 is HIGH, makes no sense to me whatsoever. Maybe there’s some secret with DDR2, who knows.

I’m afraid this is all I can respond to at this point. There’s no mystery, and it comes right back to basic economics; supply and demand.

DDR2 is old tech. There’s still plenty of it around, but many people are less likely to add more DDR2 RAM to their aging systems, and more likely to buy new systems. DDR3 is, and has been, the main RAM used in systems for years, and it makes no sense to manufacture tons of the stuff. This means that it’s more expensive to produce, as most places produce DDR3 now. Higher production costs and less market interest means that it makes perfect sense for DDR2 to be expensive, especially more than DDR3, which at the moment is being eaten up easily, possibly even greedily with modern systems that can take 16gb or more (leaving aside whether or not most people actually need that or not).

    I hope that explains it.

I have no intention of letting Podium die. I realize it’s been a while since the last release, but I’ve been busy with another job. I have to do other work to make a living.

I’ve also spent some time with the Windows 8 developer preview, to examine what is needed to make Podium run on that platform. The world is moving fast towards touch-based input on tablet-size form factors, and I want to ensure that Podium will run on those systems as well. That will require a series of updates that I’m preparing, such as an updated project file storage method, and updates to the graphics and audio layer I’m using in Podium. Those updates will take some time and unfortunately does not provide new features, but I find it important that Podium will be able to support all Windows 8 platforms (Intel/Arm) from the day Windows 8 launches.

I’m personally really glad to hear that this is the direction you are taking. I’ve always dreamed of have a tablet that I can take and use my (software) setup with. Battery life (naturally almost entirely out of your control) has held me back, among other matters unrelated to the industry, but if I can do music-related activities on the go, and then come back home to refine or master or whatever else I wish to do, I can only see that as a positive step for Podium to take.

And you’re planning on supporting ARM processors, too! Well, count me as surprised, but pleasantly! I look forward to seeing what the outcome of all this is.

For anyone that is interested, I found MiniHost does have this problem.

The problem is because I had my wireless Logitech gamepad dongle plugged in via USB. If I unplug it everything works again. I’ve never had this problem with anything before. I believe Z3ta+ 2 has a joystick function which may cause the issue. Interestingly, even when my gamepad was plugged in, FL Studio and its standalone still worked fine.

    So issue resolved now!

I have to admit that I miss having a tempo envelope myself! I was just getting used to eXT having one when I switched to Podium, which can only generate markers! 🙂

They’ve taken a chance, I’ve read their reasons, and I have to admit they have valid points for doing so.

I would also add that a lot of people have thrown their arms in the air as if that interface is the only interface there will be; but in fact there will still be a desktop. The start menu itself has been altered, sure, but I would argue heavily against it being a smart phone interface purely. It is still Windows.

My interest in Windows 8, however, is specifically for a tablet device, due to its service function alterations and abilities, coupled with next-gen Intel x86 (or x64) processors, should mean a system I can take around with me, which would allow music creation on the go. Which means I can use Podium wherever I want. And can interact with it via touch, which I add that Frits was keen to pursue at some point.

Every Windows release has its lovers and haters, but the vast majority of people just grumble at change for the simple fact that it’s different to what they’re used to. I don’t think any release will escape this, considering their incredibly substantial pool of users.

For the record, I don’t believe I will like the interface either (I hear there’s a way to switch it to the old, or that there will be if not already), but without change, nothing moves forward. Windows 7’s taskbar changes with “pinning” annoyed the hell out of me for the first couple of days until I decided to test it, and I agree with their findings; that many people don’t even need to open the start menu a lot of the time anymore. I don’t much either. The new interface may well give me more immediate access to more programs than the Windows 7 taskbar and pinning can.

I will also just add that I don’t have a separate audio PC. If I did, I hardly think needing more immediate access to large quantities of programs would be relevant. As I use the one for everything, however, I can see tangible benefits. If I can get used to the new style.

    There’s my …. 1000 cents.

I’d expect to see an increase in Windows 7 this year, if there wasn’t already a significant increase last year. Many people have found Windows 7 to be good enough to upgrade (those with the money and inclination to do so, such as myself), or have bought new computers which have it. It’s not the PR disaster (and arguably disaster in general) that Vista was.

Windows 8 just around the corner… If some nice tablets come out, I might just be a Windows 8 user soon enough! Well, in a year or so.

I miss an easy way to assign CCs to VST parameters! A MIDI learn would go a long way to make setups easy to automate, and tweak, with my MIDI controller.

For 3.1.1, I’m currently converting Podium to be a Unicode app. This will not affect English users, but other language users should then be able to enter e.g. object names and filenames using any character set. This is a step towards future support of full UI internationalization of the Podium UI.

Wow! I’m really surprised, but pleasantly so. I think all programs need to be unicode-compliant these days, in order to remain relevant on the internet, which is an international stage with an international audience.

I’ve been trying to help CDLMonline with this, and I had no luck earlier. I could’ve messed around reinstalling drivers, but I didn’t. It’s strange; essentially, it’s like the signals and/or setup of his audio/MIDI devices isn’t getting through properly.

It’s even stranger that it works on the Podium demo and not Free. I’m assuming this may have to do with the demo being a later version?

CDLMonline, I’m going to be a pain, and ask if you couldn’t try installing either the latest driver for your audio card (here is a list that might help), trying to get one for the exact model you have, or if you have the latest, actually trying an earlier driver version, if you can, for your RealTek chip. I would recommend before installing any new or old version, uninstalling the version already installed, and also uninstalling ASIO4ALL, and then once the new driver is installed, installing ASIO4ALL, and also restarting the computer before trying it.

Other than this, I’m at a loss for why two versions of Podium work differently, and VSThost works but Minihost and Traktor don’t. :S
