Roger Nichols Digital makes what he calls the “Inspector.”
Yeah, Inspector is really great, used to use it a lot. However I’m slowly preparing for the 64 bit jump so had to look for alternatives. Here are some very useful plugs in the metering department that I use all the time:
http://hofa-plugins.de/pages/start_de/4u.php
http://www.kvraudio.com/product/dbvu-by-sleepy-time-records
Plus some a bit esoteric anti-loudness war metering and phase plugs:
EDIT: Oops posted twice the same page:
https://www.audiocation.de/en/plugin
Phase AP1 and AC-R128
And the new Voxengo “Analog Third-Octave Meter”
http://www.voxengo.com/product/anspec/
Btw, Voxengo’s Span offers some hidden features. Like K-metering, that is: K-20/14/12, K-20/14/12C, DBFS and DBFS+3. Also offers Clipping, RMS, Max Crest Factor and Peak statistics. And on top of that there’s a correlation meter. 🙂
In order for them to become available one must Un“Hide Meters And Stats” at the top, and they show at the bottom of the GUI. So we have the best spectrum analyzer + pretty complete metering stats – how generous of Aleksey – awesome.
Just my 0.0001 cents.

The quietness will be changed soon for a major update, I am sure!
That’s exactly my feeling.
maybe true for music NOT related to MIDI but definitely NOT TRUE for music heavily depending on MIDI programming …
Michi, my music is entirely and 100% electronic and synthesized (Goa, Ambient) and therefore utterly depending on MIDI. So far I haven’t been stopped from creating music by the “limitations” of Podium in the MIDI field. And frankly speaking what’s the fuzz around arpeggiators and chorders and MIDI sequencers anyways? Fun to use undoubtedly, but what happened to musicality?
Yes, there are some features that I would very much like to see implemented, and I have posted about them hoping they will draw attention which didn’t happen, but even so things are pretty smooth and OK now. So in that matter I concur with Tele.
On the other hand the quietness here may refer to the actual music making of people, rather than boosting their post numbers, which is a compliment in itself I dare think and hope.
There are many points of view and many variables in this matter, so instead of further plunging to this sea of speculations I will take my leave saying that I deeply hope Trancit’s worries will not be justified.

Hi VanGogh, and welcome,
Your question is actually spot-on, as I’m working on many classical pieces now and need this badly and was planning to bring it forth as well.
But to answer the question, I’m afraid no. I’ve looked everywhere but to no avail.
The only way to achieve something like this is to make a great multitude of tempo markers with minimum value differences. However it soon becomes a mess. But still, it works.
So adding a big +1 here and expanding a little bit; A Tempo automation choice in the Master track would be just great 🙂
All the best and good luck

I guess you tried Shortcircuit v2 first. It is known to have some bugs and is abandonware now, yet never caused me any problems so far. But still.
So, I’m not very sure what might be the problem, but it is my guess that there’s something with the routing in SC itself.
Try this: Delete all the MIDI tracks from 2 to 16, and use the first one only as a master MIDI track. Then assign every sound, sample, instrument in Shocrtcircuit to its own audio output channel. This is done in the “Output” section at the right, under “Pan” – out 1-2, out 3-4 etc….
This done, everything should be just fine.

Hi blafot,
Well, in order to to use multi-timbral instruments and thus use all their MIDI channels with their respective output channels in the Mixer, you will have to drag from the inspector’s Devices section the plugin folder ending in #1 to the Timeline.
Here’s a tutorial on this:

Podium automatically creates the mappings for multitimbral instruments.
So all you have to do is drag the “Battery #1” folder from the Inspector/Device menu to the timeline.
Here’s a very helpful and detailed tutorial on this:

Well, just researched the issue a bit, and the best thing in the freeware realm I could come up with is Vember Audio’s Shortcircuit 1 (v2 wouldn’t load rx2 files at all)
As I have never used rex loops (or any loops for that matter) before, I downloaded a few free files and loaded them in SC. Most of them loaded just fine and with no issues, with all the slices and so on. But there are some loops that SC couldn’t open, opening an error box saying that the buffer is too small etc.
So you could try and see if SC will open your files adimatis. If so, then you could easily bounce the grooves to a wave file for further mixing and processing.
On the other hand ( as an alternative ) you could make your own loops and grooves by using wave samples. Surely there are 100 times more of them in the internet, and a ton of free ones.
This is a great little plugin for the purpose
LoopDrive v4
http://www.yedey.com/2009/12/loopdrive-updated-to-version-4/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUrcVHBNcwQ
Create your loops, tempo sync them to the host ( or don’t ), with some built-in effects and filters.
Alternatively there are other freeware gems: Beatburner and ABS3
http://www.gersic.com/plugins/index.php?daCat=18
(just scroll down)
This should be more than enough for building your very own grooves.
I hope this helped.

Well, currently Podium does not support MIDI plugins.
And since arpeggiators, chorders, pattern sequencers/randomizers etc. are MIDI effects, you cannot use them natively in Podium. But there’s a workaround kinda-sorta.
Here you can find some info on how to actually use midi effects in podium via third party VST hosts.

Great work 4mica, really helpful. Thanks a lot 🙂
There are still some things left for me to read, and since I don’t read in order, but rather what arises as an actual need to learn, they are scattered all across the manual, and now it will be much much easier.
Works flawlessly in Adobe Reader.

My bad. I’ve downloaded Phrazor from the dev site, therefore Demo, with the save/load, midi drag etc. limitations. They still host the files there.
So thanks one more time for the heads up, will go to Gersic now for the beta and see how it works.

Hey, great video Juan, I really enjoyed it alot. And I am particularly fond of the arps it the background. Very proggy and bring depth to the composition. 🙂
About the “message”, you say is a subjective opinion, but it is exactly what I think as well (and the possibility of it being an objective truth is quite big). Especially the part concerning “the hyped tools”.
As the saying goes “It’s not the gear, it’s the engineer”.
[subjective arguments]
In pursuit of the next big hit and commercialism, all by means of over-priced and over-hyped synths/daws/plugs, we end up having tons upon tons of over-produced, soulless and mediocre tracks all around, deemed pro simply by virtue of the tools involved and money spent, pffff.
Sad that art has become a faculty of those who can afford it, and turned it into industry and business. 🙁

Btw, it is a good opportunity for me to thank you for your great tutorials. They helped me tremendously when I first started using Podium and drastically shortened the learning-curve. Thanks mate.
A strange synchronicity is that today I myself am working on a short teaser/medley of some of my goa/psy tracks, exactly for the same reasons, all done with Podium Free and Freeware plugins, as a futile attempt to show what is possible with these “non-pro” tools.
Sorry for the Xiosynth. May you have an Andromeda A6 one day 😀
All the Best.

Oh, thank you very much 4mica for the heads up. Really appreciate it.
It is always good to have alternatives.
I tweaked and experimented with Phrazor and it is really a great app. Pity it’s discontinued though. Yet even with the limitations of the Demo version it is quite useful (after making track templates it is), and I like it more than WuisikVM for now. Definitely worth playing with.

Greetings and welcome.
To the point:
There are some tutorials in the official Zynewave YouTube channel here:
http://www.youtube.com/user/ZynewaveDotCom
A few more for absolute beginners here:

LiquidProject’s videos (extremely helpful ones):

As for the question concerning samples:
After opening Podium Free press F6. This will open the Browser on the left. From there you can click the drop-down arrow and choose the folder where your samples are. Additionally you can then click the “+” button right to the left in order to save this path. From there on you can just click-drag-and drop the desired sample to the timeline (the main window that represents the linear timeline on your composition).
I find this the most convenient way to lay down drums and FX.
If you want to use your samples as instruments ( i.e. basses, leads, full acoustic drums kits and so on) the best solution is to use a Sampler VST plugin. This is basically a plugin that loads your samples and gives you the ability to trigger them via MIDI notes and modulate them to your liking. The best freeware sampler out there is Shortcircuit by Vember Audio.
http://vemberaudio.se/shortcircuit.php
This is a good place to mention soundfonts as well. There are amazing freeware soundfonts all over the Internet, just search for them. Shortcircuit supports them, both in sf2 and sfz format.
A short video tutorial:

Installing VST plugins:
It is good to install all your plugins in one folder, generally in CProgramFiles(x86)VstPlugins…….
Those plugins which come in .dll format only must be copied there, and that’s all. In order for Podium to see them and make them available for use you must specify the vst plugins folder.
To do It:
Inside Podium->Setup->Preferences->Plugins Tab->From there click on the browse icon and choose your folder.
Here is a list of freeware plugins that I posted some time ago:
http://www.zynewave.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=575&start=30
Also check KVR. THE place for audio plugins.
The forums there are tremendous and very active. A good place to start from scratch in audio production.

In order to create a MIDI sequence, or notes in other words, you must first create a track. A few ways to do it:
1) Click on the “+” button right above the Master Track
2) Right-Click on an empty space under the Master Track and Click “Add New Track”. On the Next window you can modify the track to fit your needs. If it is going to be a Group Track ( a track that will contain other tracks in itself. A reason to do that is to group similar track together like Drums, or Guitars, or Keys, etc.), change the colour and so on.
After this you must assign an instrument to that track, so that Podium can identify it as an instrument track and “unlock” so to speak the MIDI editing options. To assign an instrument (commonly referred to as VSTi(nstrument)
click on the “Source” field and there you must have your plugins to choose from. After doing this just click on the timeline twice and there it is your first MIDI clip. You can stretch it to be as long as you need. Then just click twice on that clip and this will open the Piano Roll, the place where music is born. 🙂
If you are going to use samples and audio files only, you just drag and drop them, that’s all. After dragging the sample to the timeline, click twice on the sample, this will open the Audio Editor. Not many features in there, just the very basic things, but maybe it is the best in your case.

So, this is just a mere scratching of the surface, maybe even less. But do not despair 🙂 It is enough to get you starting. It is much better to learn thing as a part of your natural workflow, than reading theory and things that may seem obscure and esoteric at first.
I hope this was helpful and good luck.
Peace
